A statement week for Serena Williams in Stanford as she defeats Marion Bartoli 7-5,6-1 at the Bank of the West Classic for her first title in thirteen months.

Last June in the round of 16 at Wimbledon, Marion Bartoli stared down Serena Williams for her initial victory over the defending champion. Despite Williams’ twelve month absence from competition and only her second tournament back, Bartoli’s triumph was classified as a major upset.

Whether one calls it revenge or redemption, Williams was looking to make a statement in the final against Bartoli. After a tough first set, Williams vanquished Bartoli 7-5,6-1 at the Bank of the West Classic to claim her premier title since 2010 Wimbledon.

Due to Dominika Cibulkova withdrawing from their semifinal match because of an abdominal strain, Bartoli had an extra day of rest. Yet, unlike Wimbledon, fitness has not been an issue for Williams this week.

A noticeably more in shape Williams required just 69 minutes to dismiss 2011 Wimbledon finalist Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals. The following night in the semifinals, Williams dispatched 2011 Wimbledon semifinalist Sabine Lisicki in 59 minutes.

However, knowing that she won their ultimate meeting gave Bartoli a lot of confidence. Early on, the 2009 Bank of the West Classic champion gave Williams plenty to ponder.

In their fourth clash, Bartoli was aggressive from the start. By forcing errors from Williams, Bartoli capitalized on her third break point chance and went ahead 2-1. Through varying her serve, Bartoli flummoxed Williams to conserve a 4-2 lead.

With Williams’ forehand finding the bottom of the net, Bartoli had the opportunity to get a double break cushion. Still, with clutch serving, Williams fended off a total of three break points to keep the arrear to one break.

Subsequent to obtaining the upper hand in a long rally and finishing with a forehand winner, Williams manufactured double break point, her initial ones of the day. When Bartoli double faulted, the players were leveled at 4 all.

The two traded breaks the next two games until Williams ultimately held to go in front 6-5. On a miscue by Bartoli, Williams arrived at set point. With Bartoli’s pass sailing long, Williams secured the maiden set.

From that moment on, Williams was on cruise control. Following a prompt service game, Serena broke for a 2-0 edge in the second set. Then, with an overhead winner, Williams consolidated for 3-0.

Still famished, with a backhand down the line winner, Williams captured a second break for 4-0. After Bartoli carried her first game of the set, by striking a winner, Williams had championship point. As Bartoli’s return landed out of play, Williams sealed her extraordinary week.

Although Williams was satisfied to reach her first final in thirteen months, she was overjoyed to bank the title. Serena was especially grateful to the crowd for “their love and support . . .It’s so cool. . . I’m happy to be back”.

Williams acknowledged that she knew it would be a battle coming into the final saying “[Bartoli] has a good serve and she is a good player”. Williams admitted that she prepared herself for the possibility of being runner-up: “I got this far and no matter what happened”, this week is a step in the right direction.

With her maiden title in Stanford, the 38th of her career, Williams will leap from a ranking of 169 into the top 80. Depending on how well Serena performs in Toronto and Cincinnati, she could be seeded by the time the U.S. Open rolls around.

Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova are into the fourth round at Wimbledon. These three are still the strongest contenders for the title. Here's a summary of the first three rounds and a preview of the second week.

A definite truism which applies to Serena Williams is that she’s always hungry for another major. The two time defending champion demonstrated that despite some first week cobwebs, she is prepared to fight for a “three-peat” at the All England Club.

Venus Williams, a five time champion at Wimbledon, is still in contention for another title on her most successful surface. Maria Sharapova, the 2004 champion, is almost playing to the standards expected of her. Sharapova is trying to get pass the fourth round for the first time since 2006 at this venue.

The most stunning early departure was 2010 runner-up Vera Zvonareva. Here’s a mid-tournament summary and a preview of the interesting match-ups to come.

After going the distance her first two rounds, Serena Williams cruised in the third round against Maria Kirilenko. The next round, Serena will have to bring her best stuff against Marion Bartoli, the 2007 Wimbledon finalist. Bartoli is playing with great confidence since winning her maiden grass court title in Eastbourne.

Subsequent to a comfortable opening match, Venus Williams clawed past 40 year old Kimiko Date-Krumm in the second round. However, in the third round, Venus coasted to victory. Next up for Venus is Tsvestana Pironkova.

In a rematch of last year’s semifinal, Pironkova avenged her lost to Zvonareva in the third round. In 2010, Pironkova reached the semifinals by upending Venus in the quarterfinals. Pironkova also ousted Venus at the Australian Open in 2006. With Pironkova’s 2-1 against Venus, this tussle could be another doozy.

Following straight sets victories her first three matches, Sharapova meets Shuai Peng in the fourth round. If Sharapova prevails, she could encounter world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.

Wozniacki has been untroubled through three rounds. Standing in Wozniacki’s way for a maiden Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance is Dominika Cibulkova.

Nearly two years after being derailed by injuries, Sabine Lisicki is blossoming once again. Lisicki followed up her recent title in Birmingham by upsetting 2011 French Open champion Na Li in the second round. Lisicki can equal her 2009 Wimbledon quarterfinal showing as she faces Petra Cetkovska in the fourth round. Cetkovska booted Agniezska Radwanska in the second round, then shocked Ana Ivanovic in the third.

After two easy rounds, Victoria Azarenka shook off Daniela Hantuchova in a tough three set encounter. In the round of 16, Azarenka collides with Nadia Petrova, a two time Wimbledon quarterfinalist. Petrova knocked out rising star Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round. At 29 years of age, Petrova has plenty of fire power to bother Azarenka.

2010 semifinalist Petra Kvitova has been progressing quietly through the draw. The Czech’s fourth round opponent will be Yanina Wickmayer.

Along with Cetkovska, two players making their debut in the round of 16 at a major are a pair of 20 year olds, Russian Ksenia Pervak and Austrian Tamira Paszek. Pervak bounced Shahar Peer in the first round and Andrea Petkovic in the third round.

Paszek recorded the biggest win of her career over Francesca Schiavone in the third round. Since Pervak and Paszek will clash in the fourth round, one will move on to her first quarterfinal at a major.

Some other names surprisingly absent from the second week of the tournament are Samantha Stosur, Jelena Jankovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Wozniacki continues to play defensive tennis. In a quarterfinal with Sharapova, if the Russian’s aggressive style does not fail her, it’s difficult to imagine Wozniacki advancing any further.

With Venus and Serena still in the draw, the possibility of an all Williams final is plausible. But, the obstacles are huge. Should Venus get by Pironkova, Kvitova may be up in the quarterfinals and Azarenka in the semifinals.

Waiting for Serena after Bartoli could be Lisicki who’s been getting stronger with each passing round. Moreover, for Serena, a semifinal versus Sharapova would no walk in the park.

Still, out of the top half of the draw, Serena and Sharapova are the likeliest finalist. In the bottom half, if not Venus, Kvitova may book her first spot in the final at a major this tournament.

The Williams sisters made their long awaited return to competitive tennis this week. Despite being rusty, with nine of the last eleven championships at the All England Club, Venus and Serena are among the favorites. Moreover, the Wimbledon draw sets up the potential for a fifth all Williams final. Here’s a more detailed analysis.

World number one Caroline Wozniacki hopes to validate her ranking with a first major. However, Wozniacki will need to do some heavy lifting to achieve that feat.

In the quarterfinals, Wozniacki may have to go through 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova. In addition, for the Dane, a semifinal encounter with defending and four time winner Serena or reigning French Open champion Na Li may be in the cards. Needless to say, Wozniacki will have to work hard to earn her maiden major.

Serena will begin her title defense by facing the talented Aravane Rezai in the first round. In the fourth round, Serena could see another sizeable French hurdle in 2007 finalist Marion Bartoli.

Later, in the quarterfinals, Serena may clash against Li who is no push over. In Li’s case, Sabine Lisicki may present difficulties in the second round. Lisicki has been regaining her form and confidence as is evident with her recent title in Birmingham.

Sharapova is again in the mix at another major. While a first round match with countrywoman Anna Chakvetadze could be testy, Sharapova should come through. Sharapova is likely to have a tougher time in the fourth round if Samantha Stosur is the opponent.

Serena had been out of commission nearly a year. For the seventh seed to claim her fifth Wimbledon crown, she will have to come up with the type of performance which resulted in her surprise victory at the Australian Open in 2007. With Serena’s track record, it’s certainly hard to bet against her. Yet, with Ana Ivanovic, Maria Kirilenko, Flavia Pennetta and Julia Goerges in the top half of the draw, there is an endless list of players capable of pulling off an upset.

As a consequence of Kim Clijsters’ withdraw due to a foot injury, last year’s finalist Vera Zvonareva is the top seed in the bottom half. Zvonareva is slated to meet either Victoria Azarenka or Francesca Schiavone in the semifinals.

Beforehand, Jelena Jankovic and five time champion Venus offer a tantalizing potential third round match-up with the victor scheduled to collide with Zvonareva in the fourth round.

2010 semifinalist Petra Kvitova is hoping to advance one step further this time. For that to occur, the Czech may have to get past Svetlana Kuznetsova in the fourth round. In the quarterfinals, Kvitova could take on Venus, Zvonareva or Jankovic.

In the first round, Schiavone will see Jelena Dokic. Thus, it may be a short stint on the grass for the Italian. If Schiavone progresses, Andrea Petkovic could stop her in the round of 16. Schiavone’s uphill climb could continue with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Azarenka as possible quarterfinal adversaries.

Speaking of Azarenka, the Belarusian’s most difficult obstacle could be Pavlyuchenkova in the fourth round. If Azarenka prevails in such a showdown, she should sail to her initial major semifinal.

With no absolute front runner for the trophy, Sharapova, Venus and Serena who have been at the winner circle previously have an edge. Still, for young guns such as Wozniacki, Azarenka, Pavlyuchenkova and Kvitova, it’s a golden opportunity to seize the moment.

Caroline Wozniacki prevails over Elena Vesnina 6-2,6-3 at the Family Circle Cup to win her initial title in Charleston.

Two years ago, Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the final in Charleston but went down in straight sets to Sabine Lisicki. Last year, an ankle injury during the first set of the semifinals caused Wozniacki to forfeit the match. Today, Wozniacki made up for past disappointments. The world number one vanquished Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-3 for her first championship at the Family Circle Cup and her third title of the season.

Wozniacki’s road to the final was treacherous. The Dane prevailed in two tough tiebreaker sets in the third round. Wozniacki overcame Yanina Wickmayer serving for the match in the quarterfinals and battled past Jelena Jankovic in the semifinals.

For her part, Vesnina beat defending champion Samantha Stosur in the third round and knocked out two seeded opponents in the quarter and semifinals. Thus, Vesnina was hoping to cap her week with another great victory and get her maiden WTA title after failing on four prior occasions.

In their head to head, Wozniacki had a 4-1 record against Vesnina including two semifinal wins at Ponte Vedra Beach on clay in 2009 and 2010. Consequently, Vesnina would need to do something special to walk away with the trophy.

With a backhand volley winner, Vesnina arrived at break point. Yet, with a crosscourt backhand winner, Wozniacki took care of that. Finally on her fifth game point chance, Wozniacki held for 2-1 in the first set.

Then, with a backhand down the line winner, Wozniacki had double break point. When Vesnina dumped a forehand into the net, Wozniacki secured the break and consolidated for 4-1. Later, Wozniacki broke Vesnina a second time to bank the first set.

After dismissing a break point in the first game of the second set, Wozniacki manufactured a break point. However, Vesnina came up with a great backhand volley and eventually held for 1 all.

Following, in each service game, Vesnina faced a break point even after being in front 40-0. Still, the Russian found a way to get to 3 all. Moreover, with a forehand crosscourt winner, Vesnina obtained double break point. But, Wozniacki stood her ground and forged ahead to a 4-3 edge.

Later, with a forehand up the line winner, Wozniacki had sixth break point opportunity of the second set. With Vesnina’s next shot sailing long, Wozniacki captured the break for a 5-3 advantage.

Aided by mistakes from Vesnina, Wozniacki quickly arrived at double championship point. With the Russian netting a backhand, Wozniacki wrapped up the championship.

Wozniacki admitted that it was a difficult match. It frustrated the Dane having so many break chances in the second set and not capitalizing early on.

Wozniacki said she was finally able to come through by reminding herself to “stay aggressive, try to keep [the ball] deep and stay focused”. With the injury last year, Wozniacki cited that the victory was particularly sweet “as they say the third time is the charm”.

From the green clay of Charleston, the WTA tour transitions to the red clay of Europe. One notable absentee will be Kim Clijsters. The world number two suffered a severe ankle injury while dancing at a family wedding and is questionable for the French Open.

Maria Sharapova dominated her third round match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sabine Lisicki. Sam Stousur was also victorious and will be Sharapova's fourth round opponent.

Two time Sony Ericsson Open finalist Maria Sharapova commenced her bid for the title by trouncing her third round rival. Sharapova destroyed Sabine Lisicki 6-2, 6-0.

From the first ball strike, Sharapova made her presence felt. After an early break and consolidating, with Lisicki serving at 2-4, Sharapova went up triple break point. Although Lisicki got to deuce, it was just delaying the inevitable. In the end, Sharapova captured another break and closed out the set.

After getting the break the initial game of the second set, Sharapova rolled on to clinch a spot into the third round.

Subsequent to the match, Sharapova commented that it was good that it was “pretty straightforward. . .a little tricky with the conditions. [Lisicki] is someone [who] can fire the ball really well and hits pretty solid[ly] from both sides. She’s someone [who]‘s beaten top players before. . . I knew that she would come out swinging pretty hard and deep. So I just wanted to be aggressive from the beginning.”

Sharapova recently changed coaches to Thomas Hogstedt. As such, MiamiTennisNews.com inquired how the relationship was working out and what he was bringing to her game which was lacking “ it’s brought a lot of fresh, new things for me. I worked with Michael [Joyce] for many, many years. . .we had so many achievements together. It was really, really fun and we’re still the best of friends. But bringing in Thomas has just brought fresher perspectives and a lot of enthusiasm into the practice. He’s a professional coach and has a lot of experience behind his back. [He] goes about his business, just trying to make me a better player”.

Sharapova has recently changed rackets from Prince to Head, MiamiTennisNews.com wanted to determine whether her shoulder surgery factored into that decision. Sharapova replied “absolutely not. I actually tried the Head frames end of October/November, and had a few different brands, few different frames. It was one of the new racquets and new technology that Head was working on. I hit a couple of balls with it, and I think some players have a feeling when they’ve played a really long time that they know something works for them. I loved the feel of it. I loved how it helped me when I was on the run [therefore the change]”.

Fourth seed Samantha Stosur also had a comfortable first set against Lucie Safarova. Although the second set was more competitive, Stosur prevailed 6-0,7-6.

Sharapova and Stosur will go toe to toe in the fourth round. Despite Sharapova dominating their past encounters, it has been a long time since these two have meet.

With shoulder surgery two years ago, Sharapova emphasized that the two are really starting at zero. Sharapova cited “ she’s a top 5 player, and she’s been so consistent, so tough to beat. I really look forward to that. We haven’t played each other in a while. . . Personally, I have to put the previous encounters behind, take a few things that worked well for me and try to use them again, but also know that we did play a while ago. It’s always a new match”.

Lisicki was disappointed that she was not able to perform better. It has been a slow process coming off an ankle injury. Lisicki missed most of the tour last year, she is grateful to back on the court.

The German is cognizant that she has a difficult road ahead of her. Lisicki is currently training at the Bolleteri Academy and has been practicing well. But, she underscored that training cannot be a substitute for a true match environment. As such, she just wants to get back into the routine of day in and day out competing in a real match setting.

At her peak, Lisicki was ranked at 23, now she is at 217. So, MiamiTennisNews wanted to know what her goal was this year, Lisicki responded that the immediate objective was to return to the top 100 which will allow her more direct entries into the draws.

Earlier in the day, 2006 Sony Ericsson Open champ Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Shuai Peng 6-3, 6-1.

Jelena Jankovic defeated Klara Zakopalova in straight sets. Next up for Jankovic is Anabel Medina Garrigues who bounces tenth seed Shahar Peer in the second round. Medina Garrigues ousted Elena Vesnina in two sets to go through to the fourth round.

Andrea Petkovic is in fine form. The German had no difficulty booting Iveta Benesova 6-0, 6-3 in reaching the fourth round. Petkovic awaits the winner of the Caroline Wozniacki/ Daniela Hantuchova match which will be the last one for the night session.

An electrifying two weeks of tennis conclude with the women’s final on Saturday, April 2 and the men’s final on Sunday, April 3.

Blake will make his return to Miami, hoping to improve on his career-best quarterfinal showings in 2006 and 2008. Safina made her last appearance on the purple courts in 2009 as the No. 2 seeded player advancing to the third round. She recorded her career-best finish in 2008 when she advanced to the quarterfinals. Blake, always a fan favorite, earned his first ATP win in 2002 becoming the fourth African American to win an ATP title in the Open Era. In 2005, Blake grabbed the national spotlight at the U.S. Open when he played a thrilling five-set match in the quarter finals against his idol, Andre Agassi. From there, Blake’s career blossomed tremendously as he reached his career-high of No. 4 in the world in 2006 becoming the first African American to crack the top-10 since his role model, Arthur Ashe. Safina made her professional debut in 2002. The Russian star recorded a breakout season in 2008 winning a career-best four singles titles. In 2008, she was awarded the WTA Most Improved Player, and was the first player in history to defeat three reigning World No. 1s in the same season (Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, and Jelena Jankovic). Safina reached a career-high rank of No. 1 in the world in 2009, and joined her brother Marat Safin as the first brother-sister combo to both achieve World No. 1 rankings. In addition to Blake and Safina the tournament wildcards include many of the Tour’s next generation of tennis stars. Other men’s highlights include, Ryan Harrison who is a promising 18-year-old American who last year became the first American teenager to beat a top 20 opponent in a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick. At the 2010 U.S. Open, Harrison defeated the 15th seed Ivan Ljubicic in three sets in the first round for his first win in a Grand Slam tournament. Young Canadian tennis star, Milos Raonic, captured his first ATP World Tour title earlier this year in San Jose becoming the first from his nation to win an ATP World Tour title in 16 years. Afterwards, Raonic rose to a career-high No. 37. On the women’s side Romanian Sorana Cirstea reached a career-high rank of No. 23 in 2009 after recording a quarterfinal appearance at the French Open and advancing to the third round at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Cirstea won her first WTA Tour singles title in 2008 at Tashkent. German Sabine Lisicki has one career WTA Tour singles title to her credit having won in Charleston in 2009. That year she recorded a career-high singles ranking of 22 in the world. Lisicki will look to better her career-best fourth round finish in Miami in 2008. The addition of the wildcard entries adds to what is already a Grand Slam quality player field including defending Sony Ericsson Open champ Andy Roddick; 16-time Grand Slam Champion and three-time Sony Ericsson Open winner Roger Federer; reigning Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic; and 2009 Sony Ericsson Open champion Andy Murray. The women’s field is also loaded with the world’s best players including defending Sony Ericsson Open champion Kim Clijsters; three-time Sony Ericsson Open champion Venus Williams, current World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki; and three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova.
In the second round at the Sony Ericsson Open, Svetlana Kuznetsova was pushed to three sets by China’s Shuai Peng. But, Kuznetsova, the top seed, averted an upset with a 6-2,3-6,6-4 win.

In the second round at the Sony Ericsson Open, Svetlana Kuznetsova was pushed to three sets by China’s Shuai Peng. But, Kuznetsova, the top seed, averted an upset with a 6-2,3-6,6-4 win.

After dominating in the opening set, Kuznetsova was broken early in the second. Despite numerous chances to get back on serve, Kuznetsova’s failed to capitalize because of an inconsistent forehand. In the decisive third set, Kuznetsova obtained the early edge for a 3-1 lead. However, with a strong forehand stroke causing the error by Kuznetsova then a superb return, Peng erased the break deficit. Later on in the set, Kuznetsova captured the crucial break allowing her to seal the victory.

Subsequent to the match, MiamiTennisNews asked:
Q. Seems like your forehand has been off lately. What’s going on there?
Kuznetsova: Actually, it’s good. But just getting a little bit–I’m frustrated because I’m not making, but I feel it good.

Q. Do you fell more pressure after winning the French. Are you putting more pressure on yourself?
Kuznetsova: I don’t put pressure. I just get disappointed when I’m not playing good enough. That’s it.

Peng’s compatriot, Li Na, 2010 Australian semifinalist and 8th seed, was equally unlucky as Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky after multiple opportunities to win in straight sets, prevailed in a third set tiebreaker 6-4,4-6,7-6. In other matches, Marion Bartoli, the 11th seed, had no problem with Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2,6-4 . After losing the first set, Sabine Lisicki retired due to injury against Yaroslava Shvedova.

Andrea Petkovic bested 10th seed Flavia Pennetta 6-3,3-6,6-0 . Although her serve is still problematic, Ana Ivanovic came through in her match against Pauline Parmentier 6-4,6-3. After a tricky initial set, 6th seed Agnieszka Radwanska cruised in the second set for a 7-5,6-0 victory over Ekaterina Makarova. Surprisingly, Agnes Szavay squashed Alicia Molik 6-0, 6-0.

Once more this year, Gisela Dulko ousted a seeded player, this time she victimized Alona Bondarenko 7-5,6-2. Up and coming Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai had her tournament cut short as the 18th seed went down to 19 year old wildcard Petra Martic. 30th seed Anabel Medina Garrigues and 31st seed Aleksandra Wozniak fell to Roberta Vinci and Polona Hercog respectively. Yanina Wickmayer, Nadia Petrova, Daniela Hantuchova, and Roberta Vinci are through to the third round.

In the night session, meeting for the first time, Venus Williams battled Sorana Cirstea. Down love-40, Venus double faulted at 2 all to give Cirstea the break. Serving at 4-3, Cirstea netted a backhand hand digging herself a triple break point hole. Venus converted when Cirstea committed another backhand mistake. Then, Williams broke a second time at love to carry the first set.

Again in the second set, Cirstea drew first blood. With a blazing return, Cirstea set up triple break point and capitalized by forcing Venus to push her forehand long. However, the next game, Venus leveled the set at 2 a piece. Later, after erasing break point, Williams obtained a third break point with a backhand miscue by Cirstea. Venus secured the break for 5-3 when Sorana dumped a forehand into the net. With an easy hold, Venus closed out the match 6-4, 6-3.

Yesterday, the ATP first round matches were also completed with lucky loser Nicolas Lapentti reaching the second round joined by Juan Ignacio Chela, Dudi Sela, Thiemo De Bakker, Michael Berrer, Philipp Petzschner and Kevin Anderson. Mardy Fish was the only male American to advance yesterday as Ryan Sweeting, Rajeev Ram were both eliminated.

It’s that time of year when we look back at what transpired on the women’s tour over the past season and view ahead at the upcoming year. Here’s a recap of the great, the good and the down right ugly moments from 2009.

Last year, in many respects, can be characterized as bizarre. The majors commenced with a meltdown by Dinara Safina as Serena Williams thrashed her in the Australian Open final. Months later after sensational results at lead up tournaments, Safina, newly crowned world number one, had another breakdown in the French Open final vis-à-vis Svetlana Kuznetsova. As such, Kuznetsova grabbed the second major of her career.

At the All England Club, after Serena survived a riveting semifinal match against Elena Dementieva, she faced Venus in the finals for the second consecutive year. However, this go around, Serena bested big sister to capture 2009′s third major. Also a favorite to step to the finals at the U.S. Open, Serena encountered two stumbling blocks, her emotions and Kim Clijsters.

After fulfilling her desire to procreate, Clijsters discovered that her retreat from tennis had left a void. Thus, following a two year absence, Clijsters once again embraced the game. Subsequent to some impressive triumphs, Clijsters took on Serena in the semifinals. The weather may have been in part culpable, more likely though, it was Clijsters’ superb touch that got under Serena’s skin as a foot fault by a line judge roused Serena’s anger. Unsavory words by Serena caused a point penalty with Clijsters having match point. A day later, Clijsters went on to rope the U.S. Open trophy, the second major of her career.

Leading the pack of names that captivated the tour in 2009 is Dane Caroline Wozniacki. The teenager became her country’s first competitor to reach a major final. Although downed by Clijsters, after starting the year in the top 20, Wozniacki closed 2009 at number 4. Belarusian Victoria Azarenka continued her march in the right direction. Azarenka demolished Serena at the Sony Ericsson Open to catch the biggest title of her career.

On the other hand, for the Serbs, it was a year of sliding backward. Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 French Open champion and former world number one, had trouble directing her forehand and serve. With neither stroke on the money, Ivanovic did not get pass the fourth round at any of the majors. Ivanovic reached one final, Indian Wells, but failed to hoist the trophy. Fed up, Ivanovic put a punctuation to her season in October and her ranking tumbled to 21st. Number one at the start of the year, Jelena Jankovic, fared a little better than Ivanovic by collecting two titles. However, Jankovic was equally a disappointment at the majors with only a round of 16 appearance in Paris and Melbourne.

The Russians are still impacting the tour. In spite of her poor results at the majors, Safina earned three titles. In addition to the French, Kuznetsova pocketed a couple of premier titles. Other than the semis at Wimbledon, Dementieva made the semis in Australia and acquired three trophies. Maria Sharapova returned mid-year subsequent to a hiatus due to shoulder surgery with a retooled service motion. After a slow start and ditching her abbreviated service routine, Sharapova bagged a title and ended the year ranked 14th.

New hope for American tennis came in the form of teenager Melanie Oudin. On the heels of a round of 16 showing at Wimbledon, including a victory over Jankovic, at the U.S. Open, Oudin defeated Dementieva, Nadia Petrova and Sharapova before being halted in the quarterfinals. Prior to these tremendous conquests, Oudin was a star on the Federation Cup team.

With a squad devoid of Serena and Venus, significant contributions by Oudin and Alexa Glatch propelled the U.S. all the way to the Fed Cup final. Unfortunately, the Americans inexperience was well exploited by their Italian counterparts. On the back of established competitors such as Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta, who became the first Italian woman to crack the top ten this year, Italy pounced the U.S. to claim its second trophy this decade.

Teenager Sorana Cristea had a breakthrough at the majors by getting to the quarterfinals at the French Open. In the quarters, Cristea fell to 25 year old veteran Samantha Stosur. Stosur produced her best results in singles this year. Not only was Stosur a semifinalist at the French, she captured her initial singles career title in Osaka. 20 year-old Dominika Cibulkova also achieved her first big break at a major in advancing to the semis in Paris.

Frenchwoman Arvane Rezai took the maiden title of the newly created Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions, an international season ending championship in Bali. At the Sony Ericsson year ending Championships in Doha, with a pristine performance, Serena routed Venus in the finals for her only non- major title of 2009 and finished the year at number one.

One day shy of her 39th birthday, Kimiko Date Krumm became the oldest player to prevail in a WTA final at Hansol Korea Open. Similarly, German adolescent Sabine Lisicki demonstrated that she is the wave of the future by securing her first professional title at the renowned Family Circle Cup.

Possibly inspired by her old adversary’s success at the U.S. Open, in September, Justine Henin did an about-face with the stunning announcement that she would be rejoining the tour in 2010. In contrast, at the age of 30, two time major champion Amelie Mauresmo gracefully existed, declaring her retirement at season’s end.

Gambling resurfaced in the news as Wozniacki withdrew from a match. Ahead and just points away from a win, an injured Wozniacki was advised by her coach to cease play. As the discussion unfolded between the two, bets began to pour in favor of Wozniacki’s opponent. This fueled speculations of irregularities, the investigation is still ongoing. After making a splash at the U.S. Open with a semifinal run, Yanina Wickmayer was suspended due to failing to notify officials of her location for drug testing purposes. Luckily, on appeal, the decision has been reversed and Wickmayer has been reinstated.

Despite participating in doubles only at the majors and Stanford, the Williams sisters dominated winning all finals except the French Open. The latter was claimed by the Spanish team of Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual. Still, duo Liezel Huber and Cara Black remain ranked at the top of doubles tableaux.

With the flurry of names taking the spotlight in 2009, a fundamental conclusion can be deduced, there is really no dominant competitor on tour. With Henin, Clijsters and Sharapova back in the hunt, it bodes well for an engaging 2010.

The suspense is over. With Rafael Nadal’s ranking now at number 3, the burning question was whether Roger Federer will have to face his nemesis prior to the finals. The prospect of a Roger versus Rafa final remains alive with these two on opposite sides of the draw. On the other hand, there will be no Williams sisters final. Serena and Venus can only clash in the semifinals.

Federer will be aiming for a sixth consecutive U.S. Open trophy and his recent win in Cincy demonstrates that the world number one has a good shot. Still, 2003 U.S. Open champ Andy Roddick who gave Federer an unforgettable battle at Wimbledon and Novak Djokovic, 2007 U.S. Open finalist, might be formidable semifinal opponents. Nadal may find himself in a dog fight right out of the blocks with Richard Gasquet as a first round adversary. With Rafa still not in full shape with his knees, another possible obstacle will be Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals. Last year’s finalist, Andy Murray could meet Nadal in the semifinals. The Brit is hungry and healthy, a combination that may stand in the way of Nadal reaching his first U.S. Open final. In the quarterfinals, Murray might see Juan Martin Del Potro. Although the Brit has had Del Potro’s number, the Argentine may pull an ace off his sleeve. Should conditioning not become a factor, Del Potro has the tools to get to his first major final.

Top seed Dinara Safina has a tough path to the quarterfinals with Alisa Kleybanova, Lucie Safarova possible rivals in the early rounds. Jelena Jankovic, Safina’s potential quarterfinal counterpart, may have Sabine Lisicki or Ana Ivanovic to contend with. Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova could be semifinals match ups for either woman. Dementieva has looked great in the lead up tournaments and is well positioned to carry her first major. Although reigning French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova has been dealing with injury, she is a threat to take her second U.S. Open.

Besides the Williams sisters, no other women have generated as much interest as to their seeding as Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters. Sharapova and Dementieva could collide in the third round. Victoria Azarenka and Marion Bartoli might be early round opponents for Clijsters. For Kim, the good news is that she has beaten these players since her comeback. However, Clijsters may need to go through Venus to get past the quarters. Despite Serena’s lack luster showing in the warm events, the defending champion has usually been able to shine on the big stage. Therefore, Serena has to be the favorite not only against possible quarterfinal opponent Vera Zvonareva, but for the tournament.

So, lots of intrigue on both the women and men’s side. Will there be the crowning of a new champion? Or will Roger and Serena repeat and continue the building of their respective dynasties? For a look at the complete draws, click here or visit the official 2009 US Open site at www.usopen.org.
